Co-operative Education

What is Co-operative Education?

Whether you are bound for university, college, apprenticeship or the workplace, the Cooperative Education program will give students the opportunity to learn and develop the essential skills and work habits required for success in all types of workplaces. Students will acquire practical experience and develop valuable knowledge and skills in a workplace setting that suits their strengths, interests and goals. This program will help students prepare for their future after graduation and assist them in making informed career decisions.

  1. The co-op course is consists of the following sections:
  • pre-placement (in-class)
  • integration (in-class)
  • work placement (on site)
  1. Students may earn:
  • 2 Credit Co-Op Package (220 Hours) – this is half day – morning or afternoon
  • 4 Credit Co-Op Package (440 Hours) – this is full day

  1. Allows students to learn in safe, culturally responsive environments in the community;
  2. Engages all students by allowing students to be actively involved in determining what they learn, how they learn, when and where they learn, and how they demonstrate their learning;
  3. Will help students understand the value of post-secondary education and to capitalize on the possibilities and pathways available to them;
  4. Will support students in making meaningful community connections in the longer term, helping them to realize their potential as individuals, to participate in a highly skilled workforce, and to be active, engaged, and compassionate citizens.

Goals

All students can benefit from participating in cooperative education. In their experiences, students will develop:

  • A reflective habit of mind to derive meaning from their experiences;
  • The ability to apply their learning to influence decisions and actions in various aspects of their lives;
  • The skills, knowledge, and habits of mind required to become competent and confident education and career/life planners.
